A designer, teacher, lecturer and award winning quilter since 1989, Emily Senuta is a transplanted Texan who has enjoyed living in Overland Park, Kansas since 1989. A seamstress since the age of 13, she began quilting in 1975 and enjoyed it as a hobby for many years. Upon moving to Kansas, she joined a guild, worked part time at a quilt shop, and began teaching quilt classes. Her art background is limited to a few art classes taken in college, but that was enough to give her the confidence to design the floral appliqué baskets in her book Blooms and Baskets, Gems of Summer, published by AQS in 1998 and presently out of print. Through her book and the quilts that she created to support it, she has become known for distinctive, realistic, and dramatic floral appliqué; but prefers not to be pigeon holed in the appliqué category. She is proficient in hand piecing and has been runner-up twice for the Mary Krickbaum award for excellence in hand quilting. Expect her next series of quilts to reflect an entirely different style. She invented her Perfect Spiral and Perfect Fans and Shells tools as solutions for marking innovative and traditional background quilting designs. Recently her Place and Trace tools were added for the same purpose. An empty nester, Emily’s family at home consists of her helpful husband and Abby, a very spoiled German Shorthair Pointer. Her son, daughter-in-law and 2½ year old granddaughter, Beth, also live in Overland Park, which has allowed her to get a lot of practice as “Emmy”. Once a week, a treasured day is devoted to being Beth’s personal, private playmate. For more information, please view my resume.
