Classes and Lectures
If you have questions about any of these classes, please email me.
Lectures What’s in a Name? – Explores from all aspects, the process of naming quilts, historically, practically, sentimentally, humorously, etc. For those who need help and inspiration, tips and sources will be given as well as a peek into the speaker’s thought process while naming her own quilts. Slide Show. Choosing Fabrics for Appliqué – Without getting technical, Emily discusses her approach to selecting fabrics for floral appliqué. Using many of her own patterns, she will show a progression from her early “color mistakes” to improvements and finally some resounding successes. Creating the illusion of depth, letting fabrics do the work for you, improving your stash, and the importance of color in making an award winning quilt are some of the many areas that will be covered. Slide Show.
Perfect Spirals, Fans and Shells – All levels. Add a new dimension to your quilting with these tools that were created for marking unique and innovative background quilting designs. With a little instruction, many original designs become possible. A MINI PERFECT SPIRAL and MINI FANS AND SHELLS tool will be provided to each class member for use in class, purchase is optional. Hand-quilting with Emily – Emily’s hand quilting stitch has been mistaken on numerous occasions to be machine done because of its regularity both on the top and the underneath. In this class, Emily will introduce you to her style of hand quilting which is done using a small spoon in the underneath hand to protect the finger (no sore fingers ever!). More Quilting Methods – Using Emily’s new Place & Trace designs, learn timesaver quilting, a variation of big stitch. Then combine it with some decorative stitches and beads, and you may never go back to conventional quilting again!
Full Day Workshops
Fine-Tuned Hand Piecing – Beginner. Some patterns just weren’t meant to be sewn on the machine. Students learn the finer points of hand-piecing, including analyzing blocks for piecing, making accurate templates, perfect intersections, sharp points, strong seams, and using more efficient piecing sequences. Combining machine and hand piecing will be discussed and hand-piecing techniques by machine will be demonstrated.
Two Day Workshops
Abby’s Rose – Combined Class – Intermediate. From a beautiful butterfly pattern, learn two important appliqué techniques: Appli-piecing – appliqué without a foundation; Cut Away Appliqué – a whole cloth process done with the needle turn method of appliqué.
